Biography
Slash! Thrash! Grind! METAL!!!
Frightmare
are a sharp and deadly Metallic force like no other!
The band came together in mid 2002 when "Maniac"
Neil Smith asked some friends if they would be interested
in forming a new band. With the goal being to create
the catchiest, heaviest most original hybrid of old
school Death Metal, Grindcore, Punk and Thrash they
could. The lyrical influence came from Neil's life long
obsession with late 70's-early 80's Slasher films like
The Burning, Friday the 13th, Maniac, My Bloody Valentine,
Slumber Party Massacre and Sleepaway Camp. That same
year the band wrote and recorded their first Slashterpiece
appropriately titled "Midnight Murder Mania".
"MMM" was released in the winter of 2003 with
rave reviews from both magazines and fans. People noticed
right away that these freaks didn't care about the current
trends happening in heavy music and that they were all
about writing ultra catchy, blood drenched METAL. Death
Metal, Grindcore and Punkers a like all dug the "Stalk
and Thrash Grind" that Frightmare achieved on "MMM".
It was a breath of fresh air in the stagnant underground
Metal scene. It was a reminder of the days when Slayer
Thrashed, Terrorizer could grind like no other and Impetigo
were the kings of GORE.
Frightmare
took a break from 2003-2004 to with the various members
concentration on their other musical projects. Then
in early 2005 the four demented fiends got back together
to write and record their second album titled "Bringing
Back the Bloodshed". This time Frightmare upped
the ante even more with an amazing production, even
heavier razor sharp riffs, faster more precise blast
beats and an insane quad vocal attack! "Bringing
Back the Bloodshed" is the return of the Gore soaked
Metal monstrosity! Fans of everything from Repulsion
to the Misfits and everything in between will love this
new CD!
Frightmare
is Binging Back the Bloodshed in 2006 and you better
be ready!

"Bringing Back the Bloodshed" CD

Review from Braindead Webzine
Slasher movies and death metal brought together...
It doesn't get much better than this! With an equal
amount of thrash and death metal influences, this album
sounds like a mix of "Masters of Puppets"
& Exhumed/Impaled style death metal, so basicly
the same formula as "Midnight Murder Mania"
but hey, it's a damn good formula! Frightmare has Lord
Gore personel as core members, so there's also an obvious
resemblance there too, some similar guitar playing and
vocal styling (especially Gurge's very particular splattery
guttural growls) but Frightmare defintely has a tighter,
more upbeat thrash metal vibe which gives the whole
thing a pretty different vibe. Musicianship is terrifying,
with incredibly catchy riffing and expert shredding
that's bound to leave you gasping in awe! Many 5 minute
songs and not a boring second, that's masterful song-writing
to me... Also worth noting is the heavy and thick sound
production which is taking much bigger proportions than
the debut album, I'd say this is one of the best sound
production in Razorback history for sure! As for the
obscure slasher movie references, this should satisfy
even the most demanding horror geek, with a Sleepaway
Camp tribute song opening the album, and more homages
to flicks like "Don't Go into the House",
"The Mutilator", "Humongus", "Driller
Killer" along the way, cheesy horror lovers should
get a kick out of this... The cd also closes with an
inspired cover version of Laaz Rocket's "Leatherface",
straight from "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part
3" soundtrack! The true final note is a killer
Metallica "Motorbreath" jam though!!! All
in all, simply an incredibly satisfying album, everything
sounds just right here, so I'm giving this near full
marks for sheer entertainment value!

Review by: The NecroMolester
This
has got to be the most original cd I got in my collection
(not really sayin
much but my point is that its original!). This cd sees
Frightmare almost creating its own genre by blending
horror, cheezy, thrash, death metal, grindcore and even
a little punk each song. But the best thing about this
cd is the element of fun in it, and the cheezy as hell
slasher lyrics make it even better!
There
is a huge variety in the vocals(because every band member
does vocals), the vocals vary from thrashy vocals to
death metal vocals to the trademark Lord Gore vocals
(the legendary guitarist/vocalist, Maniac Neil, from
Lord Gore is in this band). There is also a guest vocal
appearence by Digestor (Sean McGrath) of Ghoul on this
cd. Each different vocalist has his own sound which
suits the music thats being played at any specific moment
on this cd, when the riffing starts getting thrashy
the vocals get that thrashy edge to them, and when the
riffing gets the Lord Gore style (catchy grind riffing)
then Maniac Neil takes over and delivers his Lord Gore
vocals! There are also points where more than one vocalist
is going the same time which adds a punch to the music.
The
riffing is pure awesomeness!! They throw in riff, after
riff, after fucking riff! The riffs are also varied,
as well as the different riffing styles! I play guitar
and I'm shit at it, but I know what's good and what's
not, but this is just fucking brilliant (much better
than what I can do haha)!! There is mostly thrash riffing,
but the riffing also ventures into Lord Gore's catchy
riffing style, and in a few songs we get hit with killer
oldschool punk riffs that will remind you of the times
before the commercial pussy college punk came and made
family friendly punk rock, or they will just remind
you of Municpal Waste, another thing I noticed about
the riffing is that it is often extremely technical,
and the pace is also varied. The guitar solos are great
and actually suit the music that's being played, they
remind you (somehow) of oldschool slasher movies. The
solos on "Angela" and "Sayride"
have got to be some of the as best and catchiest solos
I heard in my life!
The
drummer is also brilliant, he doesn't take anything
away from the music, and adds to the mix, by keeping
to the pace of the guitar. When the guitar goes off,
so does the drummer! And the drummer can go really fast!
He also doesn't just blastbeat the whole cd like most
few death metal bands do, which is a relief because
it gives your ears a break once in a while, and the
drumming doesn't get monotonous.
The
bass does its job perfectly, and you can actually hear
it! The bass on the intro of the song "They Were
Warned" is great and sets the pace for the rest
of the song!
Overall
the instruments are well co ordinated, and together
with a killer super polished production! A "metal
head" from another website I was on, was complaining
that the production wasn't raw enough and accused Frightmare
of being sell-outs. But how can a band that has never
been heard on the radio, never been featured on MTV,
and never put any music videos out be commercial!? A
good production doesn't make a band commercial! And
with their oldschool slasher movie lyrics you can see
that this band is not targeting the metalcore scene.
The goths at my (ex)school will hate this and they will
cry like bitches if you play them this!
If
you don't have this cd yet I think you should get off
your lazy ass and buy it now! It will be worth every
cent you pay for it! And for those of you who worry
about how underground a cd is before you can buy it,
let me just say that every metal head I met, who is
a fan of either thrash, death metal or grind digs this
(even punk fans)! It is fun, you can headbang to it
and will look good in any metal collection, so I'm giving
this the Necro Molesters seal of approval!! Buy this
and get a six pack of beers and invite your metal friends
over and show them the definition of fun!!

Frightmare
"Midnight Murder Mania" CD
Razorback Records 2003
Frightmare
is a band spawned from a one-man project called Maniac
Killer which was damn great. Maniac Killer was something
very grindcore-based, intense and blazing fast, Frightmare,
however, is something quite different, much more death
metal oriented, with more elaborated songs, thrashing
riffs and even a bunch of well-placed, amazing guitar
soli... So, yeah I'd say Frightmare plays muscular and
aggressive death metal with a neat grindcore edge as
well. They've got a nice, heavy and thick sound which
ressembles Lord Gore & Engorged alot, obviously,
but Frightmare might be a bit more straightforward and
focused... I think this album brilliantly recaptures
the old school death metal feel, with tightly built
songs, steadily fast, unrelenting rythms, swift thrashing
riffs, and many elements straight from old thrash metal
and grindcore genres on top of everything. Vocals oscillate
between growls and higher pitched shrieks, plus alot
of variations between the two, all sorts of gurgles
and splattery guttural sounds, all delivered with great
conviction... Alot of the growls in particular reminded
me of Glen Benton's vocals (Deicide). More musical influences...
I thought there was a lot of Repulsion to it, a pinch
of Impetigo, Macabre and maybe Massacre... Songs feel
consistent, really rich and varied, with great solid
structures, riffs are catchy and actually diversified,
drumming is tight as fuck; All in all, this is one hell
of a great death metal album, alot of it is surprising
and fresh, definitely apart from mediocre brutal death
metal produced these days. There's also the whole slasher/giallo
concept of the band which definitely strikes a nerve
with me! Slasher references from "Friday the 13th"
to "Black Christmas" & "New York
Ripper" (Quack!) culminating with a song dedicated
to "Maniac" ("Frank Zito, the Maniac",
best track on this album in my opinion...) - Pure genius!
Couple that with the awe inspiring cover artwork (by
Jake - "Tales From Uranus"), "Midnight
Murder Mania" is one of the best album in a while.
Can't wait for the sequel to this bloody massacre!
